I recently wrote a blog highlighting Australian research that shows alternating between sitting and standing at work may help reduce pain.

Luck’s Yard Clinic has carried out its own survey with a local company looking at how active people are during their working day, what musculoskeletal or other pain they feel and whether stress affects their health.

The Australian research looked at two groups of people, one of which sat while working over the course of an eight-hour day while the other alternated every 30 minutes between sitting and standing. Those who alternated were assigned an adjustable workstation.

The Luck’s Yard research found that of those surveyed the majority did take regular standing or moving breaks away from their desk (67%) but 24% got up only once or twice during the day.

Nearly 60% sat for between 6 and 8 hours daily with 30% sitting for between 2 and 6 hours. A smaller but significant amount of people said they were sitting for over 9 hours daily.

The Australian study concluded that taking regular ‘standing breaks’ throughout the day lead to improvements in musculoskeletal pain and less fatigue.

69% of people in our study said they would be willing to try a standing desk with 29% not in favour of adopting this new way of working.

Of the people surveyed by Luck’s Yard over 35% experienced pain in one part of their body and nearly 40% reported two areas of pain that was troubling them. Some experienced discomfort in three of four parts of the body while very few participants were pain free.

Lower back pain and neck pain were the two worst areas of the body affected by pain giving almost equal results. The next most significant pain was headaches followed by middle back pain and leg pain.

Stress was found to affect people to different degrees. Nearly 50% of respondents reported that stress contributed a small amount to their health condition although over 30% felt it had a larger impact.
