Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

What is the lymphatic system?

Your lymphatic system is a complex network of organs, vessels and tissues that work together to move lymph around the body.  It helps maintain fluid balance in the body and supports the immune system.

Lymph moves around the body with a complex mechanism of peristaltic movements regulated by valves, smooth muscles and aided by skeletal muscle movements.  Sometimes this free flow is impeded by obstruction in the lymph nodes, impairment in the lymphatic system post surgery, infection, lymphatic organ disorders or general lack of mobility.

What is Lymph Drainage Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage (sometimes called manual lymph drainage or MLD) is a specialised therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of specific, focused and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to stimulate the flow of lymph.

It is done by specialised practitioners or qualified physiotherapists for individuals who have been diagnosed with lymphoedema by medical professionals.

Our physiotherapist, Jecy Kunju Kunju is experienced in performing lymphatic massage for lymphoedema which she combines with breathing techniques and exercise prescription to improve overall mobility and wellbeing to help with with the normal flow of lymph in our body.

Each session will be for 45 minutes and will include gentle skin stimulation techniques in the direction of lymph flow and opening up of lymph nodes.
