Chiropractic for Children
Supporting babies, children and teenagers at Luck’s Yard Clinic
Tone Tellefsen Hughes, the founder of Luck’s Yard Clinic, has devoted most of her professional life to learning about chiropractic for the younger population. She taught chiropractic skills for this age group for over 15 years to both undergraduate and postgraduate chiropractors both in the UK, Sweden and Norway. She is a Fellow of the Pregnancy and Paediatric Faculty and also one of the founding members.
The Clinic organises regular in-house training sessions for the chiropractors on the care of younger patients and has regularly invited lecturers from the USA and Ireland to Surrey to share their knowledge and experience in caring for this age group.
Our most recent statistics show that 17% of the over 4,000 patients we see at the Luck’s Yard Clinic are under 17. To help you, we have statistically looked at the percentages within this age group:
- Newborn to 1 year: 6.8%
- 1-11 Years old: 76%
- 11-16 Years old: 30.5%

Research
The chiropractic team is dedicated to furthering research in paediatrics. They are therefore taking part in a scientific survey for babies under the age of 12 months, created by the AECC University College. The research is looking at the effect of chiropractic care for the newborn.
We have also regularly carried out audits on the statistics of our care of babies in the clinic, and Chiropractor Daniela Colores Hoglund, who worked at Luck’s Yard for 5 and a half years, based her thesis on 255 of our babies, where she found that the average age group of our newborn visits was 4-5 weeks. The average number of treatments was 2 sessions, and 21.5% of the babies were referred by a health professional.
Community and outreach
Since the opening of the clinic in 2007, The Luck’s Yard Clinic chiropractors have created many outreach activities in local schools. They have given talks in most of the local schools on the subject of posture, backpacks and how to sit better. In 2017 associate Daniela Colores Hoglund won the Associate of the Year award for her work with schools and, most importantly, with the Waverley Abbey School on behalf of the World Spine Day 2016.
Surrey Teen Summit
Tone Tellefsen Hughes is also a co-creator of the local community project The Surrey Teen Summit. This started in 2015 with a group of local healthcare and other professionals who all wanted to make a difference to the lives of teenagers. They have run 13 workshops since October 2015 on subjects such as yoga, mindfulness, personal leadership, emotional resilience and study strategies.
