Whether it’s forcing them into those oh-so-beautiful shoes that are just a bit too tight or simply neglecting the most basic of maintenance tasks, sometimes our feet take a right old battering.  As part of the annual ‘Feet for Life’ month in July, the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists is raising awareness of all aspects of foot care and foot health, with a special focus on the issue of Diabetes and Foot Care.

Over two million people in the UK are currently living with diabetes*, and recent statistics have revealed that the number of new cases is soaring.  According to figures, the incidence of diabetes climbed 74 per cent between 1997 and 2003.  By 2005, over four per cent of the population was classified as having some type of diabetes, the most common being type 2.

Foot problems commonly develop in people with diabetes and can quickly become serious, even leading to amputation of the foot or leg.  Feet for Life month aims to make people more aware of the risks of diabetes and what can be done to prevent foot problems

Key issues around diabetes and foot health include:

  • Complications with the nervous system – diabetics may not be able to feel their feet properly which means that cuts and sores can go unnoticed.
  • Damage to blood vessels and the immune system from diabetes – this can make it difficult for wounds to heal and they may become infected.
  • In some cases, poor blood flow means that antibiotics cannot easily get to the site of the infection and serious complications can result.

Yvette Mann from Luck’s Yard Clinic, Milford says: “It is essential that diabetics know how to look after and examine their feet to prevent foot problems before they occur, recognise any symptoms early, and ensure they seek the right treatment when problems do occur. They should visit a podiatrist regularly to ensure that their feet stay in tip–top condition and that any minor problems can be dealt with before they become major ones.

And it’s not just people with diabetes who need to take care of their feet; basic foot maintenance can make your life far more comfortable, and help prevent problems from developing further down the line.”

This June, why not head down to Luck’s Yard Clinic and have a foot health check with a qualified podiatrist?  Appointments can be made by calling 01483 527945.

Keep looking after your feet and make sure they take you where you want to go!
