As many of you know that since I left Luck’s Yard in June, I have been working back in a clinic in India that I have been connected with for the last 4 years.
It’s in a place called Solapur in the state of Maharashtra, about 500Km southeast of Mumbai, basically in the middle of nowhere. The clinic itself is on an ashram (a community of people working together), located in a quiet place on the outskirts of a small town. Despite the rural setting the clinic is extremely busy.
The last time I looked I could find roughly 15 chiropractors working in India that has a population of nearly 1.3 billion! So I am not usually short of patients. In fact the average time patients travel to the clinic is probably in the region of 2-3 hours. Many come from Mumbai and the longest I have heard patients have had to travel was 24 hours.
One of the great things about practicing in India is that there is little understanding of what chiropractic is by the public and therefore what it can help with. For that reason I get all sorts of weird and wonderful cases turning up looking for help. This exposure to such varied problems provides me with a clinical experience that I could never hope to gain working back in the UK, or any other western county for that matter.
Apart from the work in the clinic I have also visited schools, orphanages and institutions for handicapped children. This is actually the work I most enjoy as these children usually have very little access to decent healthcare and often have issues that chiropractic can really help with. Professionally it’s incredibly rewarding.
After spending the last 5 months in India I will return to the UK in mid November and will be working at Lucks Yard from the 22nd. I hope that I will get to see many old faces during that time.
