It seems that the old saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ could be changed to ‘….keeps the cardiologist away’.

Researchers in the US have discovered that eating just one apple a day significantly reduced Low Density Lipoproteins, the so called ‘bad’ cholesterol.

Although the study was small, with only 16 healthy participants in the 40-60 age group, LDL levels were reduced by up to 40% over a 4 week period.

The researchers say that effect is due to the polyphenols (plant compounds) found in the fruit.

Apples are a great snack to eat any time of day, they are easily transportable and now is the perfect time of year to sample the apples coming into season.

Why not look in the supermarket or your local farmers market for British grown new season apples and maybe try some different varieties.
