Golf places considerable demands on your body, from spinal rotation to power generated through your hips and shoulders. The right balance of mobility, strength and control can make a real difference to your game.
As a golfer, I know how frustrating it is when your body won’t move as you’d like. If you feel stiff after a round, struggle to rotate through your swing or have a persistent back ache, it’s worth considering whether your movement plays a part.
That’s where TPI can help.
What is TPI?
TPI stands for Titleist Performance Institute, an organisation that studies how the body relates to the golf swing. Completing my TPI Level 1 certification has deepened my understanding of how physical limitations can affect the way we swing a club.
Did you know that players advised by a TPI-certified expert won 18 of the last 20 major championships? TPI also reports that 24 of the world’s top 30 golfers receive advice from a TPI-certified expert. These figures underline the importance of understanding the body–swing relationship at the highest level of golf.
How Your Body Affects Your Golf Swing
Every golfer is different. Some have limited hip mobility or upper-back rotation; others may benefit from better balance or stability. These limitations can cause compensations in the swing that may affect consistency or contribute to discomfort.
As a chiropractor and golfer, I find this connection particularly interesting. Alongside looking at where someone feels pain, I consider how their body moves and which areas may benefit from attention.
The goal isn’t to overhaul your swing or make you a tour professional! It’s to help you understand your body, move more comfortably and build the best possible foundation for enjoying your golf.
