Laurie Harvey

Cognitive Hypnotherapist

HPD, DipCHyp, MNLP, MNCH

Laurie is an experienced Cognitive Hypnotherapist who helps people struggling with overwhelming emotions, unwanted thoughts, low confidence and habits or behaviours they would like to change.

Her interest in Cognitive Hypnotherapy began through her own experience. After having sessions to improve her confidence, Laurie noticed a meaningful change not only in the issue she had originally sought help for, but also in how she felt about herself more generally.

She realised that many of us go through life believing a lack of confidence is simply part of who we are, when it may have developed through past experiences. Having experienced the benefits of therapy herself, Laurie wanted to help others discover what might be possible for them too.

How Laurie may be able to help

Laurie works with people experiencing a range of concerns, including:

Anxiety and stress
Low confidence
Emotional eating
Sleep difficulties
Unwanted habits and behaviours
Persistent pain
Preparation for confident childbirth

Laurie finds it particularly rewarding when a client gets in touch to share something they have achieved that once felt impossible.

Many of the women she works with have spent years feeling they are not good enough or should somehow be doing better. Laurie enjoys helping them build their confidence, recognise their strengths and focus more on enjoying life than on what they believe is wrong with them.

What happens during a Cognitive Hypnotherapy session?

Cognitive Hypnotherapy may be quite different from what people imagine when they hear the word “therapy”.

Laurie takes a solution-focused approach, working towards the particular change each client would like to make. Although past experiences may be explored to understand where certain patterns began, the focus remains on helping the person move forward.

Rather than following the same process with everyone, Laurie selects gentle, collaborative techniques according to each client’s individual thoughts, feelings, behaviours and experiences. These may draw from approaches including CBT, NLP, EFT, EMDR and psychosensory trauma-processing techniques.

Together, Laurie and her client explore why certain unhelpful patterns may be running automatically, even when they consciously want to think, feel or behave differently. The aim is to begin changing those patterns and develop more helpful ways of responding.

Laurie may also provide personalised recordings to use between sessions, helping clients continue and reinforce the work they have begun together.

Feeling nervous about hypnotherapy?

It is completely understandable to feel uncertain about hypnotherapy, particularly if your only experience of it comes from stage shows.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is very different. You remain aware and present throughout the session and do not hand over control. Laurie explains each part of the process and works collaboratively, helping you feel comfortable and involved in the changes you would like to make.

Rapport is especially important to Laurie. She wants each person to feel that they are part of a genuine, trusting relationship rather than having a process “done” to them.

What happens during the free discovery call?

Laurie offers a free introductory discovery call so you can learn a little about each other and explore what working together might look like.

It is a relaxed conversation rather than a sales pitch. You can talk about what is currently happening, what you would like to change and any questions or concerns you may have. Laurie will explain more about how she works so that you can decide whether her approach feels right for you.

At the end of the call, Laurie encourages you to take some time to think before making a commitment. The conversation is simply an opportunity to meet and decide whether working together feels like a good fit.

Training and qualifications

Laurie holds a Diploma in Cognitive Hypnotherapy, an NLP Master Practitioner Certificate and a Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma. Her training is externally verified by the National Council for Hypnotherapy and accredited by NCFE.

She also undertakes ongoing continuing professional development to keep her knowledge current and develop her understanding of modern neuroscience, psychology and therapeutic techniques.

Away from the clinic

Outside her work, Laurie enjoys gardening, reading, walking and practising yoga. She has also recently returned to playing the saxophone and is a long-suffering Charlton Athletic supporter, which she describes as its own form of resilience training.

“Laurie provided a relaxed space where I felt she held my hand throughout my journey. Her kind and calm approach allowed me to discover what had been holding me back for many years on a subconscious level. I feel lighter, happier and more relaxed. It has been a truly transformational experience.”
