Chiropractic and children

We are very experienced in treating toddlers and older children (school age and teenagers) at Luck’s Yard Clinic.

At Luck’s Yard clinic we have a standard for the evaluation and treatment for each age group and problem. This has been created from clinical experience and following best practice recommendations. Your child’s progress and development is important to us!

For your child’s best possible outcome, we may recommend that we work with another health care practitioner in conjunction with our care. This might be a podiatrist, physiotherapist or occupational therapist to name a few. Any referrals would be discussed with you as and when necessary and appropriate.

When you bring your child to a chiropractor, we will take a thorough medical history and examine your son or daughters’ posture and muscle balance, as well as reflexes and joint function.

The examination is aimed at determining if spinal and joint motion is normal and how the vertebral segments are functioning.

Children are treated differently from adults. We take into consideration their skeletal muscular ligament maturity and adapt the treatment accordingly.

The emphasis is on spinal and postural alignment and so we use many soft tissue and gentle mobilisation techniques.

We also discuss issues such as sitting with electronic devices, computer games and carrying school bags.

Advice – guidance – support
Childhood and teenage years are very important for the developing structure and we therefore offer one-to-one rehabilitation programmes for retraining and strengthening the muscles of the spine.

Chiropractic in Pregnancy
We are very experienced in advising and treating women during pregnancy.

Baby Checks for Charity

For several years Luck’s Yard has offered a 30 minute baby check for all newborn babies (up to 12 weeks old) in return for a donation to our nominated local charity.

In the past we have supported the Maternity Unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital by raising money for its vital charity, the Safe Delivery Trust Fund and the Special Care Baby Unit at the Royal Surrey.  We are delighted to have raised over £3000 and seen over 300 babies!

During the last year we decided to use these funds for the benefit of our paediatric patients with special needs.

As of 1st October 2014 Baby checks will be charged at £20 for a 30 minute session (the normal charge would be £50).

During the period 2013/2014 we carried out 71 newborn baby checks. This raised over £710 which enabled us to subsidise appointments for children with special needs or disabilities.

This equates to over 35 hours of the the chiropractor’s time that they donate for this worthwhile cause.

The chiropractors offer 8 sessions at £20 every month on a first come, first served basis. Once these places have been filled, the 30 minute baby check is charged at £50.

We aim to take a full history of the pregnancy and birth.  Of interest is the position of the baby in the womb, if it was in a breech or transverse position and, if so, for how long.  It is also important to know about your child presently, such as how well he/she sleeps, feeds and his/her general wellbeing.  As babies are unable to tell us with words, we find out by enquiring about their behaviour and daily routines.  A lot of information can be ascertained at this stage.

The examination

During the examination, the postural and muscular tension is assessed, as well as the individual and global movement of the body, spine and neck.  Particular attention is put on spinal mobility and alignment.  The head shape and symmetry of the cranial bones are evaluated.  For issues with feeding difficulties, the sucking reflex, jaw and mouth muscles will be assessed.  The abdomen and diaphragm will be examined for tension and congestion.  The hips, knees and feet will be examined and tested for alignment and stability.  The examination may vary for babies and children due to their age and development.

The treatment

If treatment is recommended is very gentle and always with the co-operation of the baby or child.  Some babies sleep through the session and we make every effort to make it comfortable for them and they may sometimes lie on a bean bag for comfort and relaxation. We also encourage both parents to join us during the treatment.

Progress and treatment response

During the treatment sessions we will always enquire about the progress and evaluate their postural and mechanical changes. We may offer advice on nutrition, sleeping positions, car seats of exercises and work alongside GPs, specialists and health visitors where necessary.  We encourage you as a parent to ask us as many questions as possible and let us know of any changes that has occurred so that we can help you to the best of our ability with the treatment.

We are also happy to speak to you on the phone or by e-mail should you have any more questions.
