Backand pelvic pain in pregnancy (PGP & SPD)
Even though nine months is a relatively short period in a woman's life, it can be hugely influential on her body now and afterwards. Research have found that at least 50% of women experience some kind of back pain during pregnancy and 20 % may suffer from pelvic girdle pains, which in approximately 2% of women can be very disabling.
Some women feel the normal strain as their bodies adapt and accommodate to the growing baby. This can manifest itself in back pain, mid back and rib pain and headaches or carpal tunnel syndrome, to mention a few. Being pregnant also means that you are restricted in what pain relief you can choose, and Chiropractic offers a safe and gentle solution for these symptoms.
Other women will find their bodies becoming less supportive and even unstable, especially in the lower back, pelvic region and the symphysis pubis joints. This condition is now more widely recognised and diagnosed, but many women still find they are left without helpful advice, support or treatment.
The manager of Luck’s Yard Clinic is, a Chiropractor with many years' interest and research into pregnancy related pelvic girdle instability (PGP) and Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD), Over the 13 years that she have researched and lectured in this area, she has found the general awareness increasing, but a wider knowledge of this diagnosis is still needed. Many women lack a proper diagnosis and support.
Some women are literally locked into their house, as they are unable to walk upstairs or outside. Many are unable to look after their homes and children. Hovering and shopping is very difficult. Symptoms may include pain, stiffness, swelling or clicking in the posterior Sacroiliac joints, SP joint (at the front) or a combination of all of the above.
Needless to say, this can really affect the confidence and emotional well being during a time where hormones are already flowing wildly and your life is about to change dramatically. It is also a strain for most relationships.
Help and advice it at hand!
