What is hynotherapy?

Hypnosis is a pleasant relaxed state and an altered state of consciousness.

The word hypnosis comes from the Greek word hypnos meaning ‘to sleep’.  It was named by Dr James Braid in 1869 after Hypnosis, the Greek God of sleep. Its use has been recorded in ancient India, Egypt and Greece.

The first documented amputation using hypnosis alone was in 1842.  The British Medical Association recognised hypnosis in 1982.  There have been recent TV documentaries showing the use of hypnosis for teeth extractions and insertion of implants, and also repair of abdominal hernia where hypnosis has been the only form of anaesthesia.

  • Hypnosis is an ‘altered state of consciousness’, similar to that experienced when day dreaming or when travelling from A to B on a train deep in thought and you suddenly realise that you have arrived!
  • You go into waking hypnosis when you read a book or watch a film and you become so engrossed that you are not aware of anything else.
  • As you drop off to sleep and before you awaken you pass through the same level of consciousness as if you were in hypnosis.
  • You are in a state of focused attention.
  • The subconscious mind stores everything experienced by an individual and the hypnotherapist can guide the client using relaxation to a level of consciousness to enable the release of blocks and provide new ways forward.
  • Hypnosis is the state you are in and hypnotherapy is the therapeutic work which occurs when you are in hypnosis.

Benefits

  • Quick and effective
  • Promotes positive change
  • Effective management of stress
  • Able to deal with root cause of problems
  • Helps change unwanted behaviours
  • Gentle release of suppressed feelings
  • Sexual problems

Will hypnotherapy work for me?

  • Most likely yes, and if it is not your preferred method of working then Helen offers other supportive options.

How will I feel?

  • Generally very relaxed and yet you can be in hypnosis without being relaxed.  Being relaxed often enables you to reach a deeper state of hypnosis.
  • A hypnotic state heightens the senses.

Is it safe?

  • No hypnotherapist can make you do anything against your will or that you would not morally do.
  • One definition of hypnosis is that all hypnosis is ‘self-hypnosis’ – you have to consent and no-one can make you run around like a headless chicken.  Those people who do on the stage, for example, are aware and are willing to behave in that manner.

Will I lose control or not wake up?

  • No, there are many ways that an experienced hypnotherapist can bring you out of hypnosis – the worst possible scenario being that you would fall into a natural sleep and be woken from that.
  • If your hypnotherapist reminds you that you are paying so much per hour, then it is easy to!
  • In hypnosis you are more likely to be in control.
